Do you realise as we age we forget the past easier?
Events I did during childhood, I used to vividly remember in my 20s. Now it seems murkier and even forgotten. At times I feel a sense of familiarity, but cannot recall the event.
We live to an average of 80 years old. I do not reckon I will remember anything significant by then. But my childhood bears my most valuable memories and happiness. It is the best any child can ask for.
I play all day long with dogs. I get down and dirty in drainage, folding paper boats. I move about out of the house looking for a playmate. I chatter with the elders to pass time. In the 70s to 80s, the bond between neighbours were tight. So wherever I go, everyone knows where I stayed. Even dogs roam around freely and return home when it’s time. I used to play with several dogs. Ah wong, Ha-bak ha-bak, shorty.
My house in Chinatown is not the typical apartment. Some say it is dark, old, dirty, messy, blackened concrete floor. However it is this place that built my charming childhood.
I like to think death is for us to make space for the new.
Do we forget the past to make space for the present?
